Icon Lost: The Wigwam in Waldorf, MD is Demolished
As I saw the demolition crew working, my heart began to sink. The Waldorf Wigwam, known through my childhood as Walls Bakery, is being leveled to the ground.
While Walls Bakery may have survived, an iconic piece of Waldorf’s landscape has not. Long time residents my remember the building in it’s previous lives as a gogo, a restaurant, and more. Some locals even remember having the high school proms and homecomings held there many years ago, but now it only exists as a memory.
The Wigwam was one of the few remaining vestiges of Waldorf’s past, back when buildings like the Stardust hosted musical guests such as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. The towering road signs for places like the Thunderbird motel stood proud, and Waldorf, a tiny little truck stop town along a major shipping route hosted slot machines in every building and restroom along route 301.
Progress and change are inevitable, but it’s a shame there was no place left in Waldorf for a building like the Wigwam.
